[365 Toy Project: 027/365] Batman: Scarlet Part 9
"Each man is a hero and an oracle to somebody." — Ralph Waldo Emerson

Barbara Gordon’s Journal, April 9th 2019.

The coordinates arrived on my cellphone. The location was a quiet corner of Gotham University’s campus where they were renovating some old laboratories. In the evenings the workers aren’t there, and the place is closed to staff and students.

The prospect of meeting Batman gave me quite an adrenaline rush. After it wore off, however, my rational mind weighed the perils of going off alone to meet a rather dangerous individual. Still, my gut told me that I was in no personal danger; the Batman was a friend of my father’s, and thus also a friend of mine.

I did not have to wait long. I heard the rustling of a cloak behind me, so I wheeled around and there he was, just as I remembered him from my first meeting with him 11 years ago.

"Hello Barbara," he said, his voice a hoarse whisper.

"Uhm, hello," I replied back, rather unsure as to what to say.

"I need your help," said Batman, getting down to business. "I need you to find a vehicle for me. Second generation Renault R5, hatchback, green. The license plate is 187 9812, from Gotham."

"Hold on," I protested. "Firstly, how did you know Oracle was me? And secondly, how am I supposed to go about this?"

"When you first tipped off the police with your Oracle persona, you weren’t that careful covering your tracks online. That was all it took for me to find out who you were. I’ve been keeping an eye on you, making sure you don’t end up in trouble," said Batman.

"Oh," I replied meekly.

"I found your case analysis methods quite creative. I have here with me a hard drive containing terabytes of video footage of all of the major streets of Gotham, from up to six months ago. This footage has been collected by the Gotham police from various security and traffic cameras throughout Gotham. Searching it all manually would take too much time. I need you to find a way to do it automatically."

Batman handed me a brown envelope.

"Since you have the license plate, I take it you’ve already found out the identity of the killer?" I said inquiringly.

"You’re hypothesis is correct. It isn’t the Joker. These murders have a very specific and personal motive. However, the Joker’s influence is there. If he didn’t do it, then it was someone whose mind he warped. I started my search at Arkham Asylum, where the Joker spent years incarcerated. The ring was the key to unlocking the mystery," explained Batman.

"The prints found on the ring didn’t match anyone in the fingerprints database," I interjected.

"Which means two things; the suspect has no criminal record or history of being detained, and also has not been background-checked for employment. However, the trail of clues still led back to Arkham. The first victim, Eugene Drepper, frequently went to Arkham to sell his company’s experimental psych drugs. My inquires of the asylum staff indicated he was also seeing a nurse who worked there. This nurse had a fascination with the Joker, and cared for him in the asylum. After the Joker escaped a year ago, she went out with the late Mr. Drepper and were engaged to be married at the end of last year."

"But something went wrong," I said.

"The other lead was Rachel Ferrier; I took the liberty of questioning her housemate," replied Batman. I silently wondered how much of a fright the housemate got from that.

"The housemate told me that Eugene Drepper had broken up his engagement with the nurse a month ago and started seeing Rachel Ferrier," continued Batman. "Thus we have established a motive for the murders of both Drepper and Ferrier; revenge."

"That’s why the ring was left at the first crime scene! The nurse threw away her engagement ring after she killed Drepper!" I exclaimed.

"Exactly."

"What about the carving of the faces? The names scrawled in blood?"

"The work of a mind that’s snapped, precipitated by the Joker’s treacherous influence no doubt. Another soul has been brought down to his level."

"So this green Renault hatchback is her car? Why do we need to find this, can’t we get her at work?"

"She quit a month ago. Her last known address was a deserted house. She has no known family or friends here."

I pondered Batman’s request. Here was a mountain of data being handed to me on a silver platter. I felt dwarfed by both the data and the daunting task of Batman’s request.

"I’ll need some serious computing muscle for this problem," I told him.

"Inside the envelope is a hard drive containing the data, and a little black box that authenticates you. It allows you to connect securely to my private datacenter. Clusters, mainframes, you name it. You’ll also be able to send me messages. The details are all in

Catch Me If You Can
I realized another thing, that in this world fast runners do not always win the races, and the brave do not always win the battles. Wise men do not always earn a living, intelligent men do not always get rich, and capable men do not always rise to high positions.
